«Today, more than half of African Americans have incomes more than double the poverty line. By one standard, this is middle class. Amid this success, however, much black poverty remains. The African-American poverty rate, at 23.6% in 2006, is triple the white rate. Black unemployment remains double that for whites. […] about 7,9% of black males age 18-64 are either in jail or in prison. The black male incarceration rate exceeds the white male rate by a factor of eight to one. Appalingly, the lifetime chances of a black male youth entering prison exceed 25% - and this figure excludes those who will only go to the local jail.»
